Recently I have signed up to Wordze for my Keyword research. I have always used Google Adwords and Digital Point for my research in the past, but I decided I would like something with a little more meat to it. I do realise these tools are not 100% accurate and always try and use a combination of tools to get a better picture of what to focus on. Wordze has been quite good, its fast, you can do all kinda of research on it, and it defiantly makes a good starting ground for keyword research. However today I thought Id look at what they say is the top 100 search terms for the last month, to be honest I normally ignore all the top 100 search lists, I do not make sites for adsense and only focus on either client sites or sites that I am personally interested in so the top 100 is pointless to me. Anyway the top 100 Wordze provide was not exactly what I would of expected.

Now some of them are fair enough I can see Myspace, Ebay, craiglist, games etc all being in the list. Even things like UK Viagra Supplier, Vicodin etc are believable. The ones that stand out however are xnxx, califormia coldwell banker ray pierce, chair steamer, tiava, latex mask and montblanc pen are all a little suspect to me. On further research xnxx and tiava would appear to be porn sites, as popular as porn is I can see something as specific as that being in the top one hundred. MontBlanc Pens are very nice, I own one myself (present off my father, I am not that posh), but I have only ever seen a handful of people using them and I can not see how all of a sudden everyone wants a £100+ fountain/ballpoint pen. Then there are califormia coldwell banker ray pierce, chair steamer, latex mask, there is no way in the world they are in the top ten for real!

Now in comparison Google Zeitgeist shows some different results. Zeitgeist shows the top gaining terms each month so I guess that is a little different than the top terms, it is also more country specific but the results are as follows for the UK

1. Camelot
2. Dermalogica
3. Hulk Hogan
4. Wonder woman
5. CAD
6. Body shop
7. Leicester
8. Europe
9. Widgets
10. Scarborough
11. Mens hair styles
12. Hotpoint
13. Wal-mart
14. Curve ball
15. Air India

Again some of these terms seem odd, I can not see people searching for Curve ball that much but then again it is based on the gaining popularity of the key term.

In conclusion I think the top 100 list goes to show how you should take some Keyword research with a pinch of salt sometimes and try and get your data from as many sources as possible before you jump in and optimise your site.
